Both Deceased Students Identified in the Providence Campus Incident as Police Persist in Hunt for Perpetrator.

The pair of scholars who lost their lives in Saturday’s tragic incident on the university campus were being remembered Monday – as a manhunt for their shooter continued following the release by local law enforcement of the single suspect of interest in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.

Cook was vice-president of Brown’s division of the campus GOP group, the group said. The White House press secretary also posted condolences publicly, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Remembering her family and friends, especially her parents.”

An International Student

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the Ivy League university, family members said.

The victim's identification was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and aiding others,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a online post.

Details of the Attack

Nine other people were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the engineering department of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Officials stated late Sunday that a 24-year-man arrested in a search at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“We have a murderer out there,” declared Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you have to regroup and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”

Community Anxiety

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate new worry for our public”.

The gunman opened fire inside a classroom in the engineering facility on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a police source reported to the Associated Press.

Law enforcement that entered the hotel seized a pair of pistols and two loaded 30-round magazines when the suspect was detained, the news agency reported.

The Wounded Victims

Regarding the nine injured, a single scholar was released from the hospital, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in grave but unchanging health, and one was in critical condition, police said on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a independent school in North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

Further Tributes

Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only in her youth... but at the university she was a shining example in that institution as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the group. “She was famed for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she worked for her branch and other students,” he said.

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, friends, and fellow students and grieve for of his promising future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest college with about 7,300 undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents reported in the US so far in 2025, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
